Some days travelling is hard. Especially when budget travelling. Between jet lag, sleeping in dorms and the fact that no matter how many times you wash your clothes everything in your suitcase smells a little stale, sometimes all you need is a touch of glamour to brighten up your day. Adding a touch of glamour does not have to be expensive, so here are a few things I like to do to add a touch of glamour to budget travel, or even just a day in my home city!
They say that the eyes are the window to the soul and nothing makes me feel more glamorous than some fabulous eye make up. I like to add a touch of old Hollywood glamour with some liquid eyeliner and a good mascara. I used Model Co’s Flatfish Volumising Black Mascara and Mirenesse’s Secret Weapon 24hour Eyeliner, both of which I found on Luxola. Both are new brands to me, as was the experience of ordering make up online and I am happy to say that both have been a great experience! My order arrived within in two days and I particularly love the liquid eyeliner, which lasted well all day without smudging. This is something that is very important to me when traveling as I rather focus on the beautiful city I am exploring than whether or not I have make up smudged all over my face!

Spending time in an art gallery, even if just for an hour always adds something special to my day. I think it has something to do with the serenity and beauty of a gallery. Whenever I get the chance I love to put on a favourite outfit and pop down to the National Gallery of Victoria to get lost in the collections. Many art galleries have collections that can be viewed for free, or special prices depending on the time and day of the week. This is a great way to immerse yourself in the culture of a city even when travelling on a tight budget.
Nothing beats afternoon tea. Dainty tasty treats and floral china are bound to make you smile, especially when the cafe has patterned wallpaper! My favourite (budget friendly) tea rooms in Melbourne’s CBD are the Hopetoun Tea Rooms, the Tea Salon for scones and La Belle Miette for macarons.
Never underestimate the power of a silk scarf. There is a reason that the likes of Grace, Audrey and Marilyn were frequently photographed wearing a silk scarf, it adds instant glamour! You can wear it a variety of ways (there are a few great ideas here), and it also comes in handy when you are having a bad hair day!
There is no better way to end a day (or afternoon) than with a pretty cocktail! I love to look for a dark and atmospheric bar, or alternatively a rooftop bar (that way you get the added benefit of stunning city views!) Try Eau de Vie or Madam Brussels in the Melbourne CDB for instant glamour!
