I have never before seen the appeal of spending the day lying on the beach. Perhaps its because I am not normally a summer person. Or perhaps its because I am used to filling my days with a million and one things. But lounging on an orange chair, with my feet in the black sand and the crystal blue water stretching out ahead- I am starting to see the appeal.

Being in Santorini you can’t help feel as though you are living in a postcard, or maybe a dream. This beautiful Cylade island is surprisingly large. We stayed in the main town of Fira during our three-day trip. Despite being a tourist hub, the town was still extremely peaceful – it helps that everyone was in holiday mode!
In Santorini, we met up with my cousin, Adriana, with whom we are currently travelling. Unfortunately, I was the only person on the island with the flu (seriously, who is sick in 30+ degree weather?). This meant I missed out on a few classic Santorini experiences. I sent myself to bed for a day while the girls spent a day in Oia. Tourists head to Oia for the spectacular sunsets, but I was VERY happy with the sunset in Fira. However, being sick did force me to slow down and relax and really embrace holiday mode.
On our last day we headed to the beach armed with our books and sunscreen, ready to enjoy a relaxing day on the beach. We chose Perissa for our beach day, which was only a short bus ride away. Because of the close proximity to the volcano the sand was black, something I had never seen in person before. Between the black sand, orange umbrellas and blue sea I was devastated I didn’t bring my camera, so apologies for the iPhone photo of the beach!
We were extremely lucky with our choice of accommodation during our stay. Pension Petros is a wonderful family owned hotel where we were made to feel like one the family. The sisters who run the front desk are extremely helpful and accommodating and even drove us to another town when we wanted to go out for dinner!
Santorini ended up being the perfect little getaway, and the perfect place for me to recover. We had a wonderful time exploring the island and being mesmerised by the incredible views!
